New Year is one of the most beloved and cherished holidays of the year. Both adults and children like celebrating this day. In most countries it traditionally falls on the night of December 31 st . Thus, January 1 st marks the beginning of the new calendar year.

As for me, I start thinking of New Year presents at the beginning of December. I usually prepare handmade postcards for people I love and value. They say that I make fantastic postcards. That’s because I attended some scrapbooking classes several years ago.

Starting from the end of November all the shops, offices and other places in the street wear special, festive decorations and remind a fairy tale. As for my family, we start decorating the house in the middle of December.

My father usually buys a tall fir-tree and sets it up in the living-room. My brother and I happily decorate it with bright thematic toys, garlands and confetti.

For the New Year feast my mum cooks special dishes. Every year, on the 31 st of December there are plenty of sweet cookies, some vegetable salads, a roasted chicken and a bottle of champagne on our table.

At midnight my dad fills everyone’s glasses with champagne and says the toast to welcome the coming year. We also turn on the TV to hear the chimes of the Kremlin. At the same time I know that somewhere in London my English penfriend listens to the chimes of famous Big Ben.

Мой папа обычно покупает высокую ель и устанавливает ее в гостиной. Мы с братом с удовольствием украшаем ее яркими тематическими игрушками, гирляндами и конфетти.

Для новогоднего застолья моя мама готовит особые блюда. Ежегодно 31-го декабря у нас на столе сладкая выпечка, овощные салаты, жареная курица и бутылка шампанского.

В полночь мой отец наливает всем шампанское и произносит тост, приветствуя наступающий год. Мы также включаем телевизор, чтобы услышать куранты Кремля. В то же время я знаю, что где-то в Лондоне мой английский друг по переписке слушает бой часов знаменитого Биг-Бена.

My name is Catherine. I’m 12 years old. In our family’s favorite holiday is New Year’s Eve. In late December, the streets, parks, plazas dress in festive attire. Through the streets and squares stretched garlands colored lanterns. Everyone is preparing for the New Year. And in the main square set a huge tree. We are beginning to prepare for the holiday. New Year is a great holiday in our country. Everybody likes it very much. It is especially loved by little children. People do not go to work on that day, and children do not go to school. This holiday is considered to be a family holiday. It is usually celebrated at home among the members of the family.

People decorate their houses and usually have a fir-tree which stands in the corner of the room. Those fir-trees are very beautiful. The presents are usually put under these trees. Our parents prepare to this holiday well. They buy a New Year tree, decorate it, buy a lot of tasty food and drinks.

At twelve o’clock in the night people can see the president on TV which addresses them with traditional words of congratulation. At this time people are sitting at the tables to their holiday dinner and enjoy it in a good company. Young people usually organize a dance party and have a lot of fun. Some of them go out into the streets and the squares. The next day friends usually come to wish a Happy New Year to all the members of the family.

The New Year of our life has begun. Everyone hopes it will really be happy.

Новый год- большой праздник в нашей стране. Всем он очень нравится. Он особенно любим маленькими детьми. Люди не ходят на работу в этот день, а дети не ходят в школу. Этот праздник считается семейным праздником. Он, как правило, отмечается у себя дома среди членов семьи.

Люди украшают свои дома и, как правило, ставят ель, которая стоит в углу комнаты. Эти ели очень красивы. Подарки обычно ставят под этими деревьями. Наши родители старательно готовятся к этому празднику. Они покупают новогоднюю елку, украшают её, покупают много вкусной еды и напитков.

What is New Year"s?
Does everyone celebrate the New Year? Does the celebration fall in the same day each year? I think New Year"s is a holiday that everyone celebrates but will not be celebrated on the same day of each year. For instance, in my country, Vietnam, New Year"s day is different from the American New Year because we don"t go by the American calendar. We go by the Chinese calendar. Usually my New Year"s celebration is in Mid-January or February; while the Laotians" New Year is in April. The youngsters especially look forward to this ceremony because each one receives a small sum of money wrapped in the traditional red envelope. On these days we eat special cakes that we don"t eat during regular days. It is called sticky rice cake " Banh Chung"?. The American New Year is not a significant celebration as the Vietnamese New Year which focuses on traditions, customs, and religious aspects important to all Vietnamese.

Traditionally, the Vietnamese New year is the lunar New Year Festival. It is the most important Vietnamese holiday, and it is called " Tet Nguyen Dan"?. It is a celebration which combines the excitement of the Fourth of July, thanksgiving, Christmas and the beginning of spring as well as the New Year. The traditional Vietnamese calendar runs in cycles of twelve years. A genie, in the form of an animal figure, dominates each year. They are in the following order: mouse, buffalo, tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, cock, dog, and hog. As the old year gives way to the new year, the ruling genie quietly bows out to the next genie. How I Saw the New Year in

New Year is my favourite holiday.We celebrate it on the 31st of December.

This year I celebrated New Year with my family. On New Year Eve we bought a New Year tree and decorated it with coloured balls and bright lights. We bought presents for our friends and relatives. My mother and I cooked a holiday supper. We made tasty salads, chicken, potatoes and mushrooms. We made a holiday cake, too. We bought a lot of fruit and sweets. We decorated our house with flakes and toys and put beautiful candles on the fireplace. We put a nice tablecloth, place and cups on the table.

Our guests came to visit us in the evening. They gave me wonderful presents. My aunt gave me a teddy bear as a present. My uncle`s present for me was a beautiful doll.

Then Father Frost came to our place. He was so funny! He had a big bag of presents.I told him a poem about winter, and he gave me a computer game as a present.

At last New Year came! We congratulated our dearest and nearest and wished them a Happy New Year! We enjoyed food and drinks. We danced, sang songs and played. I played the guitar. We had a good time together.

New Year was a merry and a happy holiday. I liked it very much.
